Consumer Education on Web Tracking
Great initiatives on the horizon for educating consumers on internet advertising and their privacy.
Advertisers need data - and information - to better target ads to consumers so consumers receive less junk and less irrelevant offers. Consumers want their privacy protected. Herein lies the issue.
There's a fine-line here. Consumers don't necessarily understand the technology - or need for tracking - and therefore lash out to privacy groups. And rightly so - if they don't understand what's going on then they must be educated.
IAB is working on initiatives like these - so ultimately web advertising doesn't go the way of telemarketing and the Do-Not-Call list. If consumers understand HOW their information is used - beyond just some 9 point text at the base of a website - then ultimately they can make the decision as to whether their information is being compromised or if it's necessary.
Step in the right direction - in my opinion - as online advertising is here to stay and we're just getting started. Don't want to see a Do-Not-Ad-Track list anytime in the near future - personally.
