Google Ad Phone

So it's no secret - at least to me - that in just a few years our handheld devices are going to be our all-in-one life devices. In ways, they already are with our iPhones and Blackberry's having paved the way for the future.

I saw a commercial for a phone that has a full screen projector yesterday on TV. I think this is the prelude to many of our concerns for a screen that's visible yet can still fit in our pockets. Obviously, the technology already exists for our phones to act as credit card devices for payment and identification using RFID and bluetooth technology.

The above said, with the Google phone a year off - it'll be interesting to see if the market will still rely on an ad-rich network like Google appears to be launching. People are skeptical to ads - now more than ever with social networking recommendations holding more credibility than ads. The way Google pulls this off will have to be with care.

I'm assuming the phone won't be free - and there will have to be some costs to being connected and able to make calls. However, with the ad network behind it, it'll likely be highly subsidized and a serious competitor to the likes of Verizon and AT&T.

For Verizon and AT&T - this should be scary - as they have older business models that are in need of adaptation. However, Google is taking a leap as well in assuming that ad-based phone networks are going to be welcomed in a world that's becoming increasingly skeptical of online advertising.

My bet is that Google can pull this off - but not without a lot of testing and trial and error. But they're good at doing just that - they're a big company not afraid to test and abandon ship when the writing's on the wall. Will be a real wild card in 2011.
