How amazing is it that as marketers, we no longer even need to have a tangible product or service to ring up billions in sales? People buying ringtones, iphone apps and screensavers are creating multi-billion dollar markets and it's all virtual.

This makes me think of the lead generation business. As a veteran lead gen guy, I like to think of the lead generation business as one that's both profitable but also virtual in the essence that you're selling interest-based data.

The mere fact that an inquiry takes place is essentially a transaction. You're not selling anything specifically, yourself, as the lead generator. You're just selling the data of those interested to the end seller of the product or service.

I for one will be racking my brain over the next few months to think more in-depth of how my company can profit from the virtual goods business. What kind of gizmo, widget, app or what-have-you will people be willing to spend $1 per transaction in the next year to two years?

Information - such as answers to a question? Maybe. Consulting via Twitter? Just some ideas. I'll be thinking about this one as this is a market that's on the launch pad and fully ready for take off.
