Addicted to Social Media

With the average US office worker spending 2 hours daily - while on the clock - surfing the web for personal use, it's clear to me that we're heading towards the road of being addicted to social media.

I personally see people ALL DAY logging onto Facebook and Twitter - either by PC or PDA - just to update their status or tweet. When I say ALL DAY - I mean ALL DAY.

Is it enticing? Yes - being social and going to what might be thought-of as an all-day virtual party is great. There's virtual games for farming and more. There's past flames - even a potential business contact here and there. Social Media has all the trappings for luring us in and keeping us there.

The obvious questions to me are how advertisers can harness this power. The thought of addiction - in itself - sounds like a great venue for advertising a given product or service. Add to this, the revenue model of how social networks will thrive and profit in 2010 and beyond.

Seeing this addiction as a bad or good thing is, well, in the eye of the beholder. But ultimately, seeing how the money can be made from these hundreds of millions of "users" is a thing of beauty for anyone who's ever been in business.
