Paperless Census?

Posted by Chris Consorte

Why - I ask - are we spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars (and killing trees) advertising and executing a paper decenial census?

Why not make the entire census and e-campaign - saving millions - while tying the census to an secure and pass-protected database for people to simply log-into and take via a tutorial-type web application?

Simple enough - easily done - and people could be potentially notified via postcard (much cheaper than a census packet) stating they've been selected and it's their duty to participate in the census. The results would be streamlined - fast - and there's no postage costs necessary or hauling by the Postal Service for return-census'.

Just makes sense to me. What doesn't make sense is killing trees and spending more taxpayer dollars on mailers when we're in a financial deficit of record amount.
