Domain Real Estate Grab
Domain Speculation - it's been around for 15 years. But I'm a believer that long-term, it's much like real estate and they're not making any more.
Sure, there'll be .net, .biz and the like. In fact, they'll continue to create new "products" for domains (.mobi) for years to come. However, true value remains in .com's and I'm personally always on the lookout for valuable "property".
Securing the rights to domains can be as inexpensive as a few bucks per year thru GoDaddy - or any other hosting company - or more expensive when you're acquiring a domain from another owner thru direct purchase or bidding.
Bottom line is, if there's value for the future AND you have a plan for the domain (sale, development, traffic building, etc) then play ball. I suspect many years from now, folks will be sitting around saying "I could have bought that domain for $5.99 10 years ago - I really should have...". The thing is, people love to hear those stories but most don't like telling them.
