Basic FTC rule for online advertising - Tell the Truth.

There's a lot of heat lately with the FTC, privacy, social networks and online advertising. Ultimately, the goal here is to protect the consumer in the "wild west" of the online world.

This "press" may cause for unnecessary worry on the part of legitimate advertisers worried about breaking the law. But ultimately, I boil it down to one rule - tell the truth.

The basic advertising principles, especially those related to consumer protection, apply to online advertising according the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC). These principles include that (1) advertising must be truthful and not misleading; (2) advertisements must have evidence to substantiate their claims: (3) advertisements must not be unfair. The FTC is the U.S. consumer protection agency and, therefore, the agency in charge overseeing traditional and online advertising in the U.S. Similarly, consumer protection agencies in foreign countries are the ones in charge of regulating Internet advertising; and just like in the U.S, they apply traditional advertising principles to the online advertising market.

When in doubt, listen to your gut and ask yourself if you're telling the truth. Not much different than kindergarten rules - the way I see it.
